Description
The man is seated, head bowed, fist folded against his mouth. It is the universal posture of someone thinking, and the marble has held it for two thousand years. Around him, no setting: a golden haze, almost a late-afternoon light, which erases the world and leaves only thought. The drapery of the toga falls in heavy folds over the shoulder and knee, the only material reminding us that there was a body before the idea.
The sentence is Cicero's, and it can be dated. June 46 BC. Rome is emerging from civil war, Caesar has defeated Pompey, and Cicero has withdrawn to his villa at Tusculum to be forgotten. He writes to his old friend Varro to invite him to join him, and ends his letter with this formula: if you have a garden and a library, you will lack nothing. A man who has lost his political influence, his Republic and soon his life, explaining that what we need comes down to two things. This is not comfortable wisdom, it is a choice made under constraint.
The quote is printed in French on the poster: « Si vous possédez une bibliothèque et un jardin, vous avez tout ce qu'il vous faut. » In English: “If you have a library and a garden, you have everything you need.”
For the Romans, the garden and the library together stood for otium: that time withdrawn from the world which is not idleness but the condition of thought. The garden nourishes, the library forms, and both require patience. It is an idea Menivora holds dear, at the crossroads of nature and philosophy: what matters is cultivated slowly.
Where to hang it. The golden light and neutral background make it a warm, easy-to-live-with piece, very different from a poster with a dark background. It naturally finds its place above a reading chair, in a study, a bedroom or near a bookcase, at 50x70 or 70x100 cm. The cream and amber tones go well with oak, rattan, natural linen and white or light terracotta walls. A light wood frame extends the softness of the light; a black frame creates a more graphic contrast if the room is already very mineral.
