In profile, seated on a block of stone, a marble philosopher raises his fist to his lips. His forearm rests on his knee, his gaze fixed on an invisible point in front of him. Everything in his posture speaks of the concentration of someone looking for an answer within. Above him, a sentence from the depths of time, printed in French: « Ce qui est difficile, c'est de se connaître soi-même. » — “What is difficult is to know oneself.”

Thales of Miletus is often considered the first Greek philosopher. In the sixth century BC, he sought to explain the world through reason rather than myth, and antiquity counted him among the Seven Sages. Diogenes Laertius reports that he was once asked what the most difficult thing was. His answer: to know oneself. And the easiest? To give advice to others. Twenty-six centuries later, the observation remains disarmingly accurate: it is far easier to judge others than to look ourselves in the face.

The image is built in cold, deep tones. A slightly graded petrol-blue background envelops a statue with bluish-grey highlights. Side lighting sculpts the muscles, the curly hair and the drapery over the legs, leaving a large empty area above the figure that gives the composition calm and breathing room.

This poster will find its place in a study, a bedroom, a therapist's or coach's office, or any space devoted to reflection. Its midnight-blue tones suit dark interiors, grey walls or wood paneling. It is a fitting gift for someone engaged in personal growth, a lover of ancient philosophy or a curious mind who enjoys simple, dizzying questions. It naturally complements our Socrates, Seneca and Plato posters.

At Menivora, we believe the longest journey begins with oneself.
