Some sentences cross the centuries without losing their force. This is one of them, printed in French on the poster: « Tout ce que je sais, c'est que je ne sais rien. » — “All I know is that I know nothing.” Here, it hangs above a marble philosopher seated on a stone bench, hand clenched on his drapery, gaze turned to the side, as if he had just heard a question he does not yet have an answer to.

This formula sums up an episode told by Plato in the Apology of Socrates. The oracle of Delphi had declared that no man was wiser than Socrates. Surprised, Socrates went to question those who were said to be learned, and found that they believed they knew what they did not. He, at least, was aware of his limits. The exact sentence does not appear in the text, but it faithfully condenses its idea: wisdom does not begin with certainties, it begins with a question.
