The bust fills the right side of the frame and looks out of the picture. It is all in the material: the beard and hair carved into deep curls, the worn cheekbone, the surface of the stone marked by time. The background is a weathered blue-green wall, flecked with rust, lit from the side. Nothing moves. It is an image of concentration, not spectacle, and it is the most understated register of the Philosophy collection.

The idea is deceptively simple. Marcus Aurelius is not saying we should think positively, which would be a lazy modern reading. He is saying that the soul takes on the color of what it keeps company with. The thoughts we nurture, the ones we dwell on, the ones we let settle in end up forming the very fabric of who we are. In the same passage, he uses the image of the dyer: the soul is dyed by the color of its thoughts. It is not a comforting metaphor, it is a warning. What we brood over, we become.

Hence the practical demand that follows, which people often forget to quote: guard yourself accordingly. In other words, watch what you let in. Marcus Aurelius wrote this for himself alone, at night, in military camps, in the middle of war and in the middle of an epidemic. He was not trying to reassure a reader, he was trying to hold on. That is what gives the sentence its weight, and also why it resonates so much today, at a time when what enters our heads is no longer really our choice.

The quote is printed in French on the poster: « Le bonheur de ta vie dépend de la qualité de tes pensées. » In English: “The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts.”

Where to hang it. This is the most understated and easy-to-live-with piece in the collection. The weathered blue-green is soft, never harsh, and works in almost any interior. At 50x70 or 70x100 cm in a study, a bedroom, a hallway or above a workspace. It goes well with white, beige, warm grey, light and dark wood, brass and linen. It is also the only one in the series that can hang next to another philosophy poster without any color clash, including the black-and-white Heraclitus, with which it makes a particularly fitting pair. Every frame works; light wood is the most elegant.
